Malaysia Biotech Region

Malaysia is rapidly establishing a thriving biotechnology industry that within a decade is expected to be contributing 5% of GDP with over 150,000 employees. The country identified biotechnology as a major priority for their economy capable of enhancing productivity and sustainability as well as increasing domestic prosperity.

Although still relatively a nascent industry in Malaysia, the biotechnology sector is estimated to grow at a CAGR exceeding 21% during 2009-2012, ranking it one of the fastest growing in the Asia-Pac region.

BiotechCorp is driving this accelerated growth of biotechnology in Malaysia. It was established by the Malaysian government to assist those companies in the sector and to encourage the flow of investment. It is also looking to address some of those factors which could limit the rate of growth, such as the availability of  human resources.

Although healthcare is expected to lead the biotechnology sector growth, it is also envisaged that significant opportunities exist within agriculture, food and biofuels, making use of national resources and skills. As with all biotech clusters, it is important to create the right environment where research, talent, investors and commercial market opportunities all co-exist to strengthen the prospect of success. Malaysia has done much to encourage these factors and with considerable focus and investment by both public and private entities, it is now gaining considerable traction.

The Malaysian biotechnology sector offers great diversity of location, with five corridors of economic growth being targeted, Eastern, Northern, Sarawak, Sabah and Iskandar. This provides diverse opportunities for those wishing to bring their skills, expertise and experience to the market and contribute to its growth and prosperity.

Unquestionably, there are significant opportunities for those people interested in biotechnology and who wish to add their knowledge to a vastly expanding skill-base within the region. The visibility Malaysia now has on the global biotechnology landscape provides a fertile environment with excellent career possibilities for people coming from biotechnology clusters all over the world.

Liftstream strongly supports the sharing of skills and experience and the diversity that comes from this and so to work with companies in Malaysia who wish to attract European and International talent is something we are continually striving for. Additionally, if you are potentially interested in this region and would like to discuss more closely the career options, then please contact a Liftstream consultant.
